This is a photo album page called "Leprozenkolonie Danaradja: patiënten", its date and the artist are unknown. It’s a constellation of three black and white photographs, each capturing different scenes of what appears to be a community. The faded tones create a sense of distance, like a memory softened by time. It's unclear how the photographer approached the project of documenting this community. The images are like snapshots in a family album, candid and intimate. In one photo, a group gathers on the beach, some sitting, some wading into the water, their forms blurred and softened by the sea mist. Thinking about someone like Nan Goldin, who made work that was very much about her own life, and the people around her, I wonder about this photographer, where they came from, and how they related to the Leprozenkolonie Danaradja. It’s a potent reminder that every work of art is a product of specific time, place, and point of view.
