This collection of photographs on paper offers a glimpse into the Leprozenkolonie Danaradja, capturing moments with a woman, children, and a horse. I'm immediately drawn to the images' grainy texture and the way the light filters through the trees, creating a kind of hazy atmosphere. I wonder about the anonymous photographer and what brought them to document this particular scene. Were they an insider, deeply familiar with the colony, or an outsider looking in? What stories could they tell? There's a rawness to these images, an immediacy that reminds me of early documentary photography, like the work of Jacob Riis. There's a sense of bearing witness to a specific time and place, inviting us to reflect on the lives and experiences of those within the frame. Even though we don't know who took these photos, they participate in the ongoing conversation of how we see, record, and remember.
