Here we have an undated 'Untitled' work on paper by Gyula Kosice. The lines here, laid down in ink, feel tentative yet precise, like a spider web spun in zero gravity. The colour palette is mostly monochromatic, with washes of gray and brown which pool in certain areas, suggesting a spatial depth within the image. Kosice uses colour to create a sense of volume and shadow. There are tiny human figures dotted around inside this abstract space; a funhouse mirror version of architectural space. This work feels almost like a blueprint for a sculpture. The piece creates an experience of looking into the future, but a future viewed through the lens of mid-century modernism. I'm reminded of some of Buckminster Fuller's visionary architectural drawings. But Kosice's vision is stranger and more dreamlike, embracing the uncertainty of what is to come.
