Richard Earlom created this etching, "Landschap met Mercurius die de lier aan Apollo geeft," around 1777, in a time when mythological and pastoral scenes offered an escape from the rapid social changes of the late 18th century. Earlom, working in England, reproduces a landscape in the style of Claude Lorrain, an artist who had died almost a century before. Claude's landscapes were in high demand in England, and this print, published by John Boydell, allowed Earlom to capitalize on that demand by making Claude’s work accessible to collectors. The artwork presents a harmonious world, but it's also a constructed one. The figures of Mercury and Apollo, gods from classical mythology, represent a male centered view of creativity and power. The tranquil landscape, dotted with grazing cattle and classical ruins, reinforces an idealized vision of the past. Yet, it's the very act of Earlom recreating Claude's vision that makes this work so interesting. The print is not just a picture, but a reflection of cultural values, desires, and artistic exchange, inviting us to consider whose stories get told and how.
