Vicomte Arthur-Jean Le Bailly d'Inghuem created this etching of two horses in a stable at an unknown date. Here, d'Inghuem is using a traditional subject, the horse, often associated with wealth and leisure, but recontextualizing it within a more intimate and humble setting. During the 19th century, horses were integral to both aristocratic life and the working class, serving as symbols of status and essential labor. This image shifts the focus to the animals themselves, perhaps inviting viewers to consider the laboring animal. D'Inghuem may also be inviting viewers to consider the nature of servitude and freedom. As the viewer gazes at these horses, we might reflect on our own relationship to labor, freedom, and the spaces that confine and protect us.
