Gustave Baumann created "Night Ceremony" using a woodcut print with a restrained palette dominated by grays and creams. The mark-making feels very process-oriented, like Baumann is feeling his way through the image, one blocky shape at a time. The texture here is compelling. The surface, though flat, appears rough due to the hatched lines. Light dances across it, creating depth. There are all these individual marks that make up the whole. Look at those tiny zigzags and parallel lines! Each one is so deliberately placed, yet there is a wildness to the overall composition. The negative space becomes as important as the printed areas, creating a rhythm of light and dark. I can’t help but think of Agnes Martin when I look at this. Both artists create these subtle, meditative surfaces. They remind me that art doesn’t always need to shout to be heard, and that limitations can be a source of incredible creativity. Art invites us to embrace ambiguity and multiple interpretations.
