Curatorial notes

This, "Een plezierreisje per rijwiel" or, "A Pleasure Trip by Bicycle", is an undated print by Gordinne held at the Rijksmuseum. It’s rendered in a restrained palette of ochre, blues and greens, giving it a charming, old-fashioned feel, like a faded memory. The whole thing reads like a comic strip, a series of little vignettes detailing a rather calamitous bike ride. The artist's hand is visible in the loose, almost sketchy lines that define the figures and landscapes, giving the print a lively, spontaneous quality. Look closely at the cyclist tumbling off his bike midway down the page. The artist has captured the awkwardness and humor of the moment with a few deft strokes. The texture is flat, typical of a print, but the layering of colors creates depth and shadow, adding to the narrative. The composition reminds me a little of William Hogarth, with its satirical take on everyday life, but Gordinne brings a gentler, more whimsical sensibility to the subject. In the end, it’s this ambiguity that makes the print so compelling.
