This is a print called “De reis om de wereld met het rijwiel,” or, “Around the World on Two Wheels,” by Gordinne and the approach to image-making is a real exercise in organized chaos. The composition is this grid of narrative scenes, each one rendered in a palette of pastels and primaries. There’s a wabi-sabi quality to the registration of the print, with the colours slightly misaligned in places. The artist’s commitment to the story is what is important here, rather than being too precious about technique. My eye is drawn to the vignette where the cyclist confronts a lion, it’s this mixture of the everyday and the surreal that I find so compelling. In terms of other artists, I’m reminded of Red Grooms. He had a similar attitude of embracing the raw, expressive potential of the image. Ultimately, art is an ongoing conversation, a playful dance of ideas across time.
