I hadn't considered that. What political or social commentary do you think it might offer? Curator: Well, Csontvary positioned himself outside the conventional art world of his time. Perhaps the lonely cedar is a representation of the artist's self-image as the lonely genius. Moreover, such radical isolation of natural image calls for some interpretation; notice how much weight is put on the image of tree. Editor: That makes a lot of sense. Especially considering the Expressionistic style and emphasis on personal feeling over accurate representation. How do the historical contexts that shape our understanding of this image intersect? Curator: Indeed, that emotional investment really permeates this period. Viewing it today, we're perhaps less concerned with Csontvary's genius than the historical positioning that helped him get recognized as one, and his positioning in culture.
