Curatorial notes
Nicolas Cochin created this print, "Voetenzalving van Christus door Maria Magdalena", sometime in the 17th century. The print’s meticulous lines create a scene dominated by architectural elements and a densely populated banquet. The eye is immediately drawn to the contrast between the structured, almost rigid, setting and the emotional scene unfolding in the foreground, where Mary Magdalene is washing the feet of Christ. The composition is strikingly theatrical. Cochin uses the architecture to frame the figures, placing them on a stage of sorts. The columns and arches not only define the space but also direct our gaze towards the central figures. This division highlights the symbolic weight of the interaction between Mary Magdalene and Christ, setting it apart from the communal meal. Cochin seems interested in exploring how the arrangement of space and figures can create a powerful visual narrative. The print isn't merely a depiction of a biblical event; it's an exploration of drama and devotion, staged within the language of architecture and human form. Consider how the composition invites us to reflect on themes of repentance, forgiveness, and the transformative power of faith.
