Franz Ertinger created this etching titled 'Bruiloft te Kana', or 'The Wedding at Cana' in English, in the latter half of the 17th century. As a depiction of a biblical scene, this work exists within a long tradition of religious art, but Ertinger imbeds in it a very clear perspective on class. The scene shows the biblical story where Jesus turns water into wine. Notice the clear distinction between the elite guests at the table and the servants scrambling to fulfill their duties. The elevated platform in the background is filled with onlookers, most likely members of the upper class, detached from the labor taking place below. Ertinger uses the Wedding at Cana as a stage to explore the social dynamics of his time. While the story celebrates a miracle, Ertinger's etching encourages us to consider the social hierarchies that frame even the most sacred events. It reminds us that even in moments of celebration, disparities persist, quietly shaping our experiences.
