Here, we have an untitled sculpture by Mihai Olos, constructed from wood. Olos, born in Romania, lived through a period of intense political and social change, including the rise and fall of communism. This sculpture, with its geometric forms, might seem purely abstract at first glance. But consider the context: under a totalitarian regime, artists often used abstraction as a coded language. It allowed them to express dissent and explore complex ideas without direct confrontation with censorship. The interlocking wooden blocks could be seen as a metaphor for the complex, often fractured, nature of identity under political oppression. How do individuals piece themselves together when the state seeks to define every aspect of their lives? The artist is quoted as saying that "Art should ask questions, not provide answers", inviting the viewer to grapple with these complexities. The lack of a singular, defined form pushes back against imposed narratives, suggesting the power of individual interpretation. Perhaps, Olos invites us to consider the quiet resistance embedded in the act of creation itself.
