Here is an 'Untitled' sculpture by Joachim Bandau, and I can imagine Bandau working with these geometrical forms, playing with weight, balance, and material presence. I wonder what Bandau was thinking? It feels like he’s diving into an architectural question, like how things can support or not support each other. I see that the sculpture's surfaces are smooth, almost like he’s trying to trick you into thinking the material is soft, like clay or something, when it’s probably something hard like concrete. This piece reminds me of the raw, brutalist architectural forms, or even some of the earthworks of the 60's and 70's. It feels like Bandau is tapping into that conversation about space, form, and how we relate to the built environment. It shows me how artists are constantly riffing off of each other, across time and medium, and how sculpture and painting are just different ways of exploring the same questions.
