This is an anonymous print from 1705, commemorating Petrus Codde, made using engraving. The print presents two contrasting images framed within circles. On the left, we see a portrait of Petrus Codde, a Catholic leader, surrounded by Latin text emphasizing honor and popular acclaim. To the right, a symbolic scene unfolds, in which a Dutch Lion holding a sword and palm frond defends a lamb from bolts of lightning striking from above. Below each image, Latin and Dutch texts elaborate on themes of unjust storms and heavenly protection. The print reflects the religious tensions of the Dutch Republic at the time, particularly the conflict between Catholics and Protestants. Codde was a controversial figure, and his removal as Apostolic Vicar led to a schism within the Catholic community. The print seems to position Codde, and Catholicism in the Netherlands more broadly, as innocent and unjustly targeted. The emotional resonance of this piece lies in its appeal to ideas of justice, faith, and the defense of one's community against perceived oppression.
