Here's a decorative design with a crowned 'W' by Carel Adolph Lion Cachet, laid out on graph paper. I can almost feel the artist leaning over this grid, making very deliberate yet free-flowing marks. You know, the way the 'W' intertwines with those leafy, curlicue forms—it's a dance between structure and flourish. I can see them mapping it out, and then letting go, allowing the hand to wander and explore. You see how some of the design is in orange? Perhaps the artist was experimenting with colors, or maybe it was just a way to highlight certain areas and see how it all fits together. It reminds me of the kind of pattern-making you see in textiles, like wallpaper, where things repeat and morph. It makes me think about all the artists and designers working away, riffing off each other across time. Everyone is talking to each other, in their own way. It’s all part of the conversation.
