Curatorial notes

Israel Silvestre created this etching, titled "View of the Jesuit Church in Saint-Germain," during a period of significant religious and political tension in 17th-century France. Silvestre, who was connected to the court, captured a view of the Jesuit church in the Parisian suburb of Saint-Germain. The Jesuit order was controversial at the time. They were seen by some as overly influential and politically manipulative. Silvestre, though, presents the church as an established, even stately, part of the urban landscape. Look at the figures in the foreground: they give us a glimpse into the daily life around the church. Consider the people on the street and their relationship to the church. The Jesuit order's mission to serve the community through education and charity is hinted at here. The print invites reflection on the intertwining of religious institutions and everyday life.
