Editor: Right, so this is Cai Guo-Qiang’s "Mr Ye Who Loves Dragon," dimensions are four by six meters. It looks like some kind of fiery performance piece. What strikes you most when you look at it? Curator: The fleeting nature of it all, don't you think? Like a beautiful, terrible dream. The dragon, a symbol of power, rendered in ephemeral fire. It makes you wonder about our own fleeting passions, doesn't it? Are we all just Mr. Ye, loving the idea of the dragon more than the real thing? Editor: That’s a powerful interpretation! It really makes you think about the gap between perception and reality. Curator: Indeed! It's like chasing a phantom, a burning ideal. What stays with you after the flames are gone? Editor: It makes me want to reconsider everything I think I know about symbolism and performance. Thanks! Curator: The pleasure is all mine! It's a privilege to share space with a piece that ignites such thought.

Mr Ye Who Loves Dragon is a large rectangular drawing on paper by the Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang that was created from the residue left by the ignition of combustible materials. The composition consists of an undulating line of dense brown and black material of varying density and width. The line is burnt into the paper, and follows the route of the ignition fuse arranged prior to detonation. The scorch marks are dark at the centre of the line and fade to a lighter brown at its periphery.
