This invitation for a show at the Pierre Matisse Gallery, by Marc Chagall, has a lightness and brevity, which comes from it probably being made with crayon or pastel. It's like the quick sketch of a dream: lines confidently outline a painter, mid-flight, palette in hand, ready to make their mark. The figure itself is filled in with a blue that is more a suggestion of volume than any attempt at realism, it is about evocation rather than depiction. Looking at the hand which extends towards the painting, it is more a gesture than a hand. Chagall reminds me a bit of Joan Miró. Both artists create these playful, symbolic universes. And like Miró, Chagall isn't trying to give us answers. Instead, he invites us into a world of personal mythology. His art is an open-ended invitation to imagine.
