Curatorial notes
Leo Gestel sketched ‘Cow and Three Horses’ using graphite on paper. The faint, almost translucent lines give the artwork a delicate, ethereal quality. The composition is structured around a cluster of animals, forming a dense, almost pyramidal shape in the center of the paper. Gestel employs a minimalist approach, reducing the forms of the animals to their most basic outlines. This simplification invites us to consider the underlying structure and rhythm of the composition. The lines, though sparse, are carefully placed to define the contours and suggest depth. This evokes a sense of stillness and contemplation. The drawing’s emphasis on form over detail can be seen as part of a broader artistic trend of simplifying and abstracting natural forms to reveal their inherent geometric qualities. The ethereal quality reminds us that art’s meaning is always open to interpretation.
