This ink drawing of a stockade along a shore was made in 1819 by an anonymous artist. Ink is an interesting medium for rendering the texture and volume of such robust, functional architecture. Look closely, and you’ll notice how the artist used layered washes of diluted ink to build up a sense of depth, and convey the rough-hewn quality of the wooden structure. The ink bleeds slightly into the paper, giving it a weathered look, which evokes the stockade's exposure to the elements. The drawing captures the essence of labor and industry. You can imagine the physical effort required to construct and maintain the stockade, a symbol of maritime trade and defense. The stockade itself represents an intersection of nature and human intervention, raw materials and human ingenuity. It’s more than just a picture; it’s a record of a time and place.
