Hendrik Voogd made this pencil drawing, “Coastal View with Bulwark and Boat Pulled up on the Beach,” in the Netherlands, sometime in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century. At this time, the Dutch Republic was undergoing major political and economic upheaval. This simple scene of a beached boat and a fortified building gives us insight into the culture of the period. The stark contrast between the natural and man-made elements speaks to the complex relationship the Dutch had with their landscape. The Dutch Golden Age had ended, and the country faced economic decline, political instability, and foreign invasion. The image might be understood as a commentary on the need for security and defense in a time of uncertainty, but also the quiet beauty of the natural landscape. Art historians use a variety of sources such as letters, diaries, and financial records to provide a deeper understanding of the artwork. The meaning of art is always contingent on its social and institutional context.
