Joan Miró conjured this playful dreamscape called "Characters and Birds Party for the Night That Is Approaching" with paint, and a wild imagination. It's all about the process, you can see how he let the brush dance, letting the forms emerge as if by chance. There's a real push and pull happening here. The dark background feels sprayed or smudged, and the white looks like the opposite, all dry and crusty. Then you have these clean, bold lines of blue and black cutting through the hazy atmosphere. I am drawn to the green figure which strides out confidently into the beyond. It feels so fresh, like a young plant reaching for the sun! I think of Paul Klee and his playful approach to line and color, but Miró takes it to another level of surreal abstraction. It is a reminder that art doesn't have to be serious to be profound, it can be a party for the eyes and the mind.
