Joan Miró’s ‘Femme, étoile’ is made up of these funny, thin lines and smoky washes. When you make something, the process is all there is, and you find out how you feel while you are doing it; this piece is no different! I can’t help but think that Miró was just playing around, letting his hand lead the way! It's like he’s creating his own personal language, which I do a lot in my own work. Look at the lower figure, the one with the sort of crescent moon horns. See the way the wash sits just underneath like a shadow? It’s almost like the figure is floating in space. Art is like a conversation, a mish-mash of ideas, and Miró is just having his say. Think of other surrealists like Arp or Gorky. They are all part of the same, weird family. This piece is an invitation into his world, a world where the only rule is to enjoy yourself, maybe we can all use some of that!
