Editor: This is Paula Rego's print, "Whinney Moor," from the Tate collection. There's a harshness to the figures, and a real sense of unease. How do you interpret the power dynamics at play? Curator: The unsettling nature points to Rego's consistent engagement with politically charged narratives. Her focus often lies in subverting traditional power structures within families, and the wider social context. What do you notice about the figure's bare feet? Editor: It feels like vulnerability or a loss of status. Curator: Exactly. Rego frequently uses such symbols to challenge the established order. It's interesting to consider how the imagery evokes the socio-political forces shaping identity. Editor: I hadn't considered how literally she embodies those forces. Curator: It makes you think about art's role in questioning social norms, doesn't it?
