Cesar Paternosto’s, ‘Red Trio 6’, measures 100 by 86 cm and invites us to consider the interplay between geometric abstraction and cultural identity. Paternosto emerged from a Latin American art scene grappling with its relationship to European modernism. In ‘Red Trio 6’ the Argentinian artist moves away from traditional easel painting, using a reduced palette of red and black to create a visually arresting composition. Paternosto was part of a generation seeking to define a unique artistic language, distinct from European influences, that would reflect Latin American experiences. Paternosto said "My quest, in short, has been for a kind of painting that negates the habitual rhetoric of painting". The reductive quality of ‘Red Trio 6’ becomes a space for quiet contemplation, one where the essence of form and color speak directly to our senses. It is an opportunity to see how modernism can be reimagined through the lens of Latin American identity.
