Pablo Rey made this watercolour painting, Estados complementarios #X09, with such care. I imagine him patiently drawing each line, making marks that shift and swerve across the page. Look at the density of those reds and yellows in the middle and how they give way to blues and greens at either end, almost like the colours are breathing. I can relate to this kind of labour. When I work I am thinking, what should I do next? Does it need more of this or that? It’s always a process of adding and taking away. I can imagine Pablo wondering the same things as he made each mark. It reminds me of Agnes Martin's subtle lines, but here, Rey lets the colours bleed and blend, creating something softer and more fluid. Artists, we're all looking at each other, borrowing, stealing, and transforming. Each painting is a conversation that keeps evolving.
