This work, Estados Complementarios #X08, was created by Pablo Rey. It shows the artist's interest in the meeting point between the organic and the constructed. Rey has created the image with basic materials: watercolor washes on paper, their edges precisely defined by lines of ink dots. The washes are soft and indeterminate, in contrast with the rigid grid of points. Notice how the lines are not continuous, but rather, built from repeated marks. The artist's hand must have moved deliberately and patiently, building up the forms dot by dot. This is time consuming labor, elevated to the status of art. The result is an intriguing image, which can be seen as a kind of botanical study. Rey merges art with natural form. The title, "Complementary States," hints at the way he unites contrasting qualities within the same frame: soft and hard, regular and irregular, natural and cultural.
