This Linnenkast met gebogen zijwanden, or Linen cupboard with curved side walls, was made by Piet Kramer. It’s a beautiful piece of furniture that really speaks to the process of artmaking. The material aspects of this piece are so important; the texture of the wood, its colour, its surface. You can almost feel the grain of the wood and how it has been brought to life. Looking closely, you can see where the wood has been joined together and how the curves have been achieved. I’m really interested in the sharp black triangles on the sides; the way they draw attention to the corners and interrupt what might otherwise be a softer, more organic form. For me, this piece is in conversation with the work of the Bauhaus designers who sought to bring craft and art together. Just like painting, it's about seeing the potential in materials and processes, and allowing the final form to emerge through experiment and play.
