This is a drawing for an elaborate chandelier. We don't know when or by whom it was made. This anonymity offers a chance to reflect on the social conditions of artistic production. Before the industrial revolution, the design and manufacture of luxury goods like chandeliers involved many hands. An artist might create the initial design, but skilled artisans would then translate that design into a physical object. The labor was intensely hierarchical. The designer had a higher social status than the craftsmen, although the latter's skill was essential. The design itself speaks to the tastes of a wealthy elite. The elaborate ornamentation, the sheer scale of the proposed chandelier, and the multitude of candle holders all suggest a desire for conspicuous display. Such objects would have been found in palaces, grand houses, or churches, reinforcing the power of those institutions. The historian’s role is to uncover these layers of meaning, to examine the social relations embedded in the design, and to ask what this object reveals about the world in which it was created. Through archival research, we can begin to understand the complex networks of labor and patronage that made such objects possible.
