Pieter de Jode II created this portrait of Johann von Reumont using engraving techniques. The imagery and the text that frames his portrait give us insight into the values and preoccupations of 17th century European society. Von Reumont is depicted as a man of both war and peace, evident in the phrases “Constant in War” and “Sincere in Peace” which adorn the oval border. He is also portrayed in armor, a symbol of his military achievements, which underscores the importance of noblemen demonstrating their strength and readiness for battle. The inclusion of his coat of arms and titles below the portrait further emphasize his noble lineage, social status and the importance of family heritage. At the time, the Dutch Republic was a major center for trade and culture, but it was also embroiled in conflicts. Images like this served to uphold the social hierarchy and promote the values of leadership during times of change.
