Curatorial notes
This print, made by Philips Galle around 1600, tells a biblical story with the engraver's sharp tools and careful labor. Engraving is a precise art. Galle would have used a burin to cut lines into a copper plate. The depth and density of these lines determine the tones and textures we see in the final print. Look closely, and you'll see the incredible detail – the folds of fabric, the expressions on the figures' faces, all rendered through meticulous handwork. The story itself, of Queen Izebel's plot to seize Naboth's vineyard for her husband King Ahab, speaks to power and its abuses. Galle's rendering highlights the opulence and artifice of the royal court, contrasting sharply with the injustice at its heart. This print is not just an image, but a testament to the skills of the engraver and its historical context. It shows us how craft can illuminate narratives of social and political consequence.
