Perle Fine made this painting, 'The Roaring Wind', with oil on canvas. She's using a limited palette, mostly neutrals, tans, and blacks, allowing the forms to emerge as if through mist. The shapes feel provisional, as if she's willing to let the process guide the image. I love that. Looking closely, you can see how the paint is applied in these decisive, almost chunky strokes. Notice that assertive black mark on the right – it's like a calligraphic gesture, a bold declaration amidst the softer tones. The texture isn’t smoothed over; it’s present, raw, and honest. It’s easy to see that painting is, for Fine, a physical act, a direct translation of feeling into form. This reminds me of some of Joan Mitchell's work, where the emotional turbulence of the artist is made visible through the materiality of the paint itself. Art is, after all, a conversation, and it's fascinating to hear the echoes of one artist in the work of another.
