Curatorial notes
Francesco Londonio created this etching, "Interior of a Stable with a Seated Spinner and Sleeping Child," at a time when Europe’s elite were increasingly interested in rural life. This interest, however, often overlooked the realities of peasant life, idealizing it instead. Here, Londonio presents us with a scene that is both intimate and filled with a quiet melancholy. We see a woman, likely a mother, seated and working, while a child sleeps beside her, and lambs rest in a basket. Her gaze is direct, yet seems to look beyond us, perhaps lost in the endless labor required to maintain a family. Londonio, who focused on pastoral subjects throughout his career, does not shy away from showing the hardships of rural existence. The setting is humble, the labor is physical, yet there’s a palpable sense of human connection. This piece invites us to consider the complexities of representation, asking whose stories get told, and how.
