Cy Twombly made *Leaving Paphos Ringed With Waves V* with paint on canvas, and you can see how he let the painting become its own event. There's this turquoise field, like a memory of the sea, and then these scribbled orange shapes floating across it – boats maybe? – and yellow words scrawled above. It's all so immediate, so raw, you can practically feel the artist’s hand moving, dripping paint in places. Look at the way the orange marks bleed into the blue. It's like the painting is breathing, the colors mingling and shifting. Twombly wasn't trying to represent something, but more like capture a fleeting feeling, a sense of movement, of leaving, of waves. This reminds me a bit of Joan Mitchell, her gestural abstraction, though Twombly’s got this wild, untamed energy that's all his own. It's a conversation between artists, each riffing off the other, pushing the boundaries of what painting can be. It's not about answers, it's about the questions we ask along the way.
