Sally Gabori made this painting, Dingkarri, with synthetic polymer paint on canvas. You can really see the hand of the artist here. The paint is applied in broad strokes, not too thick, but juicy enough to leave a record of the brush's movement. Look at the way the pink butts up against the yellow, the way the turquoise almost feels like its being pushed around by the other colors. Each color feels like a distinct zone, kind of battling for space. The texture gives a sense of immediacy, like Gabori was really in the moment, responding to the colors as she laid them down. The way the paint is pulled across the canvas, you can almost feel the speed of her hand. I'm reminded of Joan Mitchell, who also had a knack for capturing a place or feeling through pure color. Both artists show us that a painting is not just a picture of something, it is an action.
