Vilhelm Lundstrom made this sketch of a standing nude woman with a piece of cloth in her hand using graphite on paper. I really get a sense of the artist's process and thinking here. I can picture him in the studio, working and reworking lines, trying to get it just right. Look how the overall form emerges with simple, confident lines, but the shading is soft and tentative. The curves of the body are sensuous, and the drapery adds an element of elegance and mystery. I wonder, was Lundstrom thinking about the classical nude, or was he after something more modern? I think of other artists like Matisse and Picasso, and the way they were also simplifying and abstracting the human form at this time. It’s like they were all in conversation, pushing each other to see the world in new ways. For me, the most interesting art happens in that space of uncertainty, where the artist is willing to experiment and take risks.
