This 'Homage to the Square,' by Josef Albers, explores nested squares in varying blue-green hues. The square, from antiquity to the present, has been a symbol of stability, order, and the rational mind. Think of the Roman castrum, the ideal city grid, or even the checkerboard patterns in ancient games. Yet, here, these hard-edged forms seem to fluctuate and breathe, defying their inherent rigidity. The interplay of colors creates an optical experience that is unsettling. As if the artist tapped into a primal, perhaps subconscious, understanding of color perception. Blue often evokes feelings of serenity and introspection. The painting invites us to look closer, and deeper to reflect on how something so fundamental as a shape can hold so much visual, emotional, and symbolic potency. The square persists, ever-present, yet endlessly mutable in the human psyche.
