Albrecht Dürer created this pen and ink drawing of Irish soldiers and peasants in 1521, using the traditional artist's materials of paper, pen and ink. What is fascinating about this piece is Dürer's attention to the textures of garments and weaponry. Note the detailed rendering of chainmail armor, or the difference between the tunics worn by the soldiers versus the coarse fabrics of the peasants' clothing. The way Dürer uses hatching to create shadows and volume really brings out these material differences. Of course, Dürer would never have actually seen the people he depicted. This image shows the products of conflict, labor and class. In that sense, it reminds us that even the most seemingly objective artistic records are always culturally mediated, shaped by assumptions about materials and social identities. It prompts us to consider the relationship between fine art and craft.
