This is Ludwig Metz's "Skizzenbuch," housed here at the Städel Museum. The sketchbook's cover presents a complex interplay of texture and muted color, immediately evoking a sense of tactile exploration. The surface is dominated by an intricate, almost chaotic pattern of fine, swirling lines, which coalesce to form a dense, organic texture. These are primarily earthy browns and tans, creating a visual field that is both calming and intriguing. The eye is drawn into the detail, prompting questions about the nature of the material itself. Is it paper, fabric, or something else entirely? The slight undulation of the tie adds a subtle dynamism, disrupting the otherwise static composition. As a whole, "Skizzenbuch" destabilizes the conventional notion of a sketchbook as merely a functional object, instead presenting it as a work that invites contemplation on the interplay between art, material, and the very process of creation.

In this sketchbook, dated 1869, Ludwig Metz drew only a few landscape and architectural motifs, probably during a trip to Greece. Especially the ruins of ancient temples and the Acropolis of Athens seem to have attracted him there, since he studied them from different vantage points. The drawing of two cuboids, executed in brown crayon at the beginning of the book, is the only motif that stands out.For a full sketchbook description, please see “Research”.
