This is Friedrich Metz's "Skizzenbuch," which translates to "Sketchbook," housed at the Städel Museum. Sketchbooks are more than just collections of preliminary drawings; they offer us an intimate glimpse into the artist's world, capturing their evolving ideas and personal experiences. A sketchbook is a space where artists can experiment, challenge conventions, and develop alternative narratives free from the constraints of the public eye. What we see in a sketchbook is raw and unfiltered thought. Think about the function of a sketchbook; it’s about the formation of ideas and the visual representation of that process, how an artist translates the world into a personal visual language. The intimate nature of a sketchbook can reveal so much about an artist's identity and their relationship to their craft. It allows us to consider the emotional and personal dimensions of artmaking.
