This photograph of two people, including Ella Uhlenbeck, with a dog in the snowy garden of a house on Bothalaan in Hilversum, was taken by Carolina (Loentje) Frederika Onnen at an unknown date. There's something so appealing to me about this sort of everyday scene, the muted tones, the way the light etches out the figures against the snow. It's like a memory, faded but still carrying the essence of a moment. I think photography has a lot to do with looking for these moments and framing them, setting them apart from the flux of everyday life. I'm also drawn to the texture of the image itself, you can see the grain, the imperfections. This reminds us of the physicality of the medium, it's not just an image, it's an object. Like Edward Steichen, Onnen makes use of photography to capture the mood and atmosphere of a specific time and place, elevating the everyday into something iconic and timeless. These photographs act as a reminder that art is not about perfection, but about the conversations we have with the world around us.
