John Hilliard created "Causes of Death" using photography to explore conceptual art. His work often dissects how we perceive images and the meanings we assign to them. In this piece, Hilliard presents four images of what appears to be a dead bird, each accompanied by a different cause of death: "Crushed," "Drowned," "Burned," and "Fell." The clinical nature of the presentation is stark. It reflects a detached observation of mortality, reminiscent of crime scene documentation. Yet, there’s also a deeper exploration of how language and image interact to shape our understanding. By presenting multiple possibilities, Hilliard challenges us to question the narratives we construct around images. He seems to ask, how do we process death? And what biases do we bring when interpreting visual information? The cumulative effect is a meditation on the fragility of life and the somewhat arbitrary systems we use to make sense of it.
