Editor: This untitled print by Joe Tilson, from 1976, layers images of Silbury Hill, a Brimstone butterfly, and what's labelled an Emmer Spikelet. It feels like a scientific illustration, but more poetic. What's your take on it? Curator: It’s fascinating to see these images combined. Notice how the artist juxtaposes natural forms with an ancient, man-made structure. Tilson is clearly interested in the materials and labor involved in creating both the monument and the print itself. How do you see this commentary on materiality and production influencing the overall meaning? Editor: I hadn’t considered the printmaking process itself. Now I see how the layering creates a conversation between the natural and constructed world. Thanks! Curator: Exactly! The art challenges distinctions between high art and craft.
