Curatorial notes
This woodcut print, "Man in klederdracht met mantel en staf," was made by François Desprez sometime in the 16th century. The image is composed of strong black lines carved into a block of wood, which would have been created using chisels and gouges. The material of the woodblock itself is critical to understanding the final product. Woodcuts like this were a relatively inexpensive way to disseminate images and texts widely. The depicted figure, in a full-coverage cloak and hood, with pine cone staff, speaks to a European fascination with the exotic, and a desire to categorize different cultures and peoples. The work involved in carving the block, while significant, was ultimately a means to mass production. This print exemplifies how the material and mode of production directly influenced the artwork’s accessibility and its role in shaping social perceptions. It prompts us to consider the relationship between labor, representation, and the circulation of ideas in the early modern period, beyond traditional art historical concerns of style and authorship.
