Wols made this painting called Composition with oil on canvas, and it's a real trip. The dominant color is this dreamy, faded blue-green, like looking up at the sky through a dirty window. Then BAM, this dark, knotted core explodes with scribbled energy. I imagine Wols hunched over this square canvas, wrestling with something deep. Was he angry? Confused? Maybe just trying to untangle a feeling? It's cool how he lets the paint drip and splatter – those marks become part of the story. That one little red blob is like a tiny heart beating in the chaos. He was part of a movement called Art Informel, all about embracing chance and intuition, like Pollock and others were doing in the states, only with a European twist. I love how artists keep talking to each other across time and space. Wols did his thing, and now we get to stand here and puzzle it out, each of us bringing our own messy feelings to the party.
