Curator: "Formas en Transicion"—or Forms in Transition. Ramon Oviedo's work. He paints in acrylic on canvas here, favoring something resembling abstract expressionism. Editor: Immediately, I'm struck by the mood, which I'd describe as murky. Like peering into a primordial soup where forms are gestating. A creation myth rendered in browns and greys, punctuated by lines that seem to crackle with latent energy. Curator: Exactly! There is this compelling dichotomy: The acrylic gives depth, this brooding texture. The painting isn't dated, making this sense of something coalescing into recognizable shapes and figures even more pronounced and almost timeless. What do you notice about the formal elements? Editor: The linear elements definitely catch my eye. Notice how Oviedo employs them? Some float, gossamer and delicate. While others delineate the white, almost ghostly shapes—structuring the canvas as much as describing its ethereal contents. A tension between the concrete and the ambiguous... Curator: Yes, there's definitely that balance, but do you see hints of playfulness despite the gloom? I see it in how the shapes interact, the playful almost scribbled-like lines on top and what seems like geometric figure near the bottom of the work. Editor: I grant you that the gold breaks from the monochrome but let’s remember this is abstraction—to me it reads almost like semiotic disruption; the signifiers straining, breaking down. Curator: Maybe both! And even without those insights it makes me question, doesn't it? To look and look and consider. Editor: Well, there’s certainly an affective power here; it’s gestural art that pulls the viewer into a state of... I guess quiet contemplation? Curator: Oviedo definitely succeeded, whatever else, in giving me something to mull over! Editor: Agreed. There is definitely plenty to come back to.
