Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this Paneelontwerp, or Panel Design, with pen and ink, likely in the early 20th century. The design unfolds with a playful symmetry, each shape echoing another in a dance of form. It’s as if Cachet is inviting us into a world where balance and whimsy coexist. The stark contrast of black ink on the grid paper really grabs you. The lines, thick and thin, create a texture that is both bold and delicate. Look at the way the ink pools and bleeds in some areas, revealing the hand of the artist, the pressure and speed of the strokes. See that vertical line, just slightly off-center? That’s where the drawing finds its soul, and its wabi-sabi spirit. Cachet's design reminds me of Hilma af Klint's work. Both explore abstract forms with an emphasis on symmetry, and invite us into spaces of contemplation and imagination. Ultimately, it’s about seeing the world in new ways, finding beauty in imperfection, and celebrating the messy, wonderful process of creation.
