Editor: This is "An Entertainment" by Susan Hiller, a video installation. It feels almost dreamlike, like fragmented memories floating in the dark. What do you see in this piece? Curator: Well, for me, it's like walking into someone else's subconscious, a slightly unnerving carnival of images and sounds! Hiller was fascinated by the overlooked, the uncanny lurking beneath the surface of the everyday. Editor: Unnerving carnival... I like that! It does feel like there's something slightly unsettling about it. Curator: Absolutely. What do you make of the Punch and Judy references? It's not exactly carefree childhood fun, is it? Editor: Definitely not! It's like a funhouse mirror version of it. I think I see a darker commentary there. Curator: Exactly! It's all about peeling back layers. Editor: I never thought of it that way! Thanks!

An Entertainment is a video and sound installation composed of four synchronised recordings of scenes from traditional English ‘Punch and Judy’ puppet shows. These are projected onto four enclosed gallery walls and are accompanied by a four-channel soundtrack of the performances. The work was commissioned by Matt’s Gallery, London, in 1990. The full projection runs for just under twenty-six minutes.
