Josef Albers made this constellation with ink on paper. I imagine him carefully drafting each precise line, the composition slowly materializing through trial, error, and intuition. I sympathize with the artist, imagining his state of mind as he created this structural constellation. What was he thinking when he made it? The flat black surface is interrupted by a series of intersecting lines, creating shapes that imply depth. The sharp lines delineate geometric forms, yet the overall effect is more ethereal than architectural, like a constellation of ideas or forms. These works always make me think about the embodied nature of painting. It is a conversation across time, where artists build upon one another’s discoveries, inspiring new ways of seeing and making. It embraces ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple readings rather than fixed meanings.
