Albrecht Altdorfer created this engraving, Hercules and a Muse, sometime in the early 16th century. Look closely, and you will see that the image is made up of thousands of tiny, precise lines. These were etched into a copper plate, which was then inked and pressed onto paper. Engraving was a relatively new technology at the time, allowing for the mass production of images. This meant that Altdorfer's work could be disseminated widely, reaching a much larger audience than traditional painting or sculpture. It was a painstaking process that required specialized skills and tools, which elevates the status of the printmaker to that of a skilled artisan. The contrast between light and dark achieved with the linear marks gives the image a rich, textured quality, almost sculptural in effect. It is through this medium that the artist’s work gains social and cultural significance, reflecting the changing landscape of art production and consumption in early modern Europe. The image shows us how the classic myths became available to a wider audience, far from the traditional elites.
